AI CAN WRITE A RESUME. YET, CAN IT TELL YOUR CAREER STORY?

6 min read

Quite recently, I was asked by a prospective client why they should hire me to write their resume when AI can do it in seconds?

AI has transformed the way we work, communicate, research, and search for jobs. Today, you can paste your resume into ChatGPT or Claude and receive feedback in seconds. You can ask AI to rewrite a bullet point, create a professional summary, identify keywords from a job description, or even generate an entirely new resume.

So, with all of this technology available at our fingertips, why hire a professional resume writer?

Because writing a resume and strategically positioning a career are two very different things.

AI can generate words. Yet, a phenomenal resume writer uncovers your value. In an increasingly competitive employment market, that distinction matters. As a classically-trained resume writer with 16+ years of experience with thousands of resumes under my belt, I stand firmly with this perspective.

Your Resume Should Sound Like You; Not Everyone Else

One of the greatest weaknesses of an AI-generated resume is also one of AI's greatest strengths: it recognizes patterns. Give an AI platform a job title and a few responsibilities, and it can quickly produce polished, professional-sounding bullet points.

The problem? Those bullets can sound remarkably similar to those being generated for thousands of other job seekers.

"Spearheaded strategic initiatives..."

"Leveraged cross-functional collaboration..."

"Drove operational excellence..."

The sentences may sound impressive, but do they actually communicate what you accomplished? That is where human expertise becomes invaluable. As a Certified Professional Resume Writer, I don't simply ask, "What did you do?"

I want to know:

What changed because you were there?

What problems did you solve?

What were you trusted to handle?

What challenges did you overcome?

Did you increase revenue, improve efficiency, strengthen a team, reduce costs, improve quality, retain customers, launch something new, transform a process, or influence an organization?

What did you accomplish that another person in the same position might not have accomplished?

Those conversations uncover the substance behind a powerful resume.

AI can polish the answer. Yet, a skilled resume writer knows which questions to ask to discover the answer in the first place.

Your Achievements Require Context

Consider the difference between responsibility and impact. A generic resume might say:

Managed a team and oversaw daily operations. That only tells the employer what the candidate was responsible for. A deeper conversation reveals that the individual actually inherited an underperforming 14-person team, redesigned workflows, introduced new quality standards, reduced turnaround time, improved retention, and increased customer satisfaction.

Now we have a story!!

The value isn't simply in making the sentence sound better. It is in recognizing which pieces of information matter, connecting them strategically, and translating them into evidence of business impact. That requires curiosity, interpretation, judgment, and human conversation.

Your Personal Brand Cannot Be Found in a Prompt

Every successful job seeker has a professional brand, whether they deliberately cultivate it or not.

Your brand is the synergy of your experience, strengths, leadership philosophy, personality, accomplishments, expertise, values, and the problems you are uniquely equipped to solve.

It answers an essential question:

Why should an employer choose you instead of another qualified candidate?

This is one of the most important elements of professional resume writing. Two people can have the same title, comparable years of experience, similar degrees, and many of the same technical skills and still bring entirely different value to an organization.

Perhaps one is exceptional at transforming struggling teams. Another excels at building relationships. Another consistently creates scalable systems. Another thrives during organizational change. Another possesses an extraordinary ability to translate highly technical concepts into language customers understand. That distinction becomes the foundation of a compelling career brand. AI can help articulate a brand after the right information has been uncovered.

But identifying that brand requires something deeper: listening carefully to a person's story, recognizing patterns across an entire career, identifying differentiators the client may not recognize in themselves, and determining which attributes will resonate most strongly with the target employer.

Your resume should not simply describe your career. It should position it.

ATS Optimization Is More Than Copying Keywords

Another common misconception is that an AI-generated resume is automatically "ATS optimized."

Artificial intelligence can certainly compare a resume against a job posting and identify frequently used terminology. That can be helpful. But genuine resume optimization requires considerably more strategy. Simply repeating words from a job advertisement does not create a compelling application.

A strong resume requires understanding the role, the organization, the industry, the employer's priorities, and the underlying problems the successful candidate will likely be expected to solve.

When I customize a resume toward an opportunity, I don't simply examine the advertisement and insert keywords. I research. I consider what the organization does, how it positions itself, what its priorities appear to be, what competencies the position emphasizes, and which accomplishments from my client's career provide the strongest evidence that they can deliver what the employer needs.

Keywords matter.

Context matters more.

The objective isn't to trick an applicant tracking system.

The objective is to create a resume capable of navigating technology and persuading the human being on the other side of it.

AI Doesn't Know Which Parts of Your Story You Have Forgotten

There is another reason the human resume writing process remains so powerful.

People frequently underestimate their own accomplishments. After doing something successfully for years, it begins to feel ordinary.

A client may casually tell me:

"I just trained the new employees."

Then I start asking questions:

How many employees?

Were you selected to develop the program?

Did you create the training curriculum?

Did you reduce onboarding time?

Did performance improve?

Was the program adopted elsewhere?

Suddenly, what initially sounded like a routine responsibility becomes evidence of leadership, instructional design, process improvement, and organizational influence. That discovery can only happen through thought-provoking conversation.

A professional resume writer often serves as part writer, part interviewer, part strategist, and part career coach. Sometimes the greatest value we provide is recognizing the significance of an accomplishment that the client had forgotten was extraordinary.

Authenticity Matters More Than Ever in the Age of AI

As more candidates use AI to generate career documents, authenticity may actually become more valuable, not less. Recruiters and hiring managers are increasingly encountering resumes filled with polished language, similar phrasing, and predictable corporate terminology.

Professional language matters.

But credibility matters more.

The strongest resumes don't merely sound impressive. They feel specific, contain details, demonstrate outcomes, and reveal a leadership methodology.

They communicate personality without becoming unprofessional.

And when the candidate enters the interview, the person sitting across from the hiring manager sounds like the person represented on the resume. Such a strategic alignment is essential.

Your resume should never become an exaggerated AI-generated version of who you think an employer wants you to be. It should communicate the strongest, clearest, most compelling version of who you actually are.

Does That Mean You Shouldn't Use AI?

Absolutely not. I believe professionals should understand AI. I also believe AI literacy will become increasingly important across almost every industry.

AI can be an extraordinary brainstorming partner. It can help analyze language, organize ideas, identify themes, compare documents, generate alternatives, and accelerate portions of the writing process.

But AI is most powerful when guided by knowledgeable human judgment.

The question isn't:

Human or AI?

The better question is:

Who is driving the strategy?

Technology should support professional expertise; not replace it.
